Par défaut Something is terrible wrong with my internet connection, needed!

Hi all

Today when I want to enter www I couldn't get online.

I'm running debian testing (etch) and it have worked without any
complaints at all ever since I installed it in november last year.

My stationary PC is connected with a D-link router DI-524 via cable.
My wifes laptop (winXP) is connected to the router via a bluetooth adapter.

The laptop couldnt get online too. So I entered (inside the winbrowser
on the laptop)http://192.168.0.2 and hit the button "Renew", then my
wife was airborn, but not my stationary PC (Fujitsu Siemens AMD64x2)
which i bought 5 months ago.

I've tried to plugin the cable, into the laptop directly from the
router and the laptop still connected fine.

All cables are connected correctly.

The only thing that I've done was to install XFCE yesterday, but i
doubt that this have caused my problems.

I have no experience in networking at all, so any is appreciated!!

I've contacted my local LUG but they couldn't me.
We have tried to change the mac address but that didn't either.
The problem was to get an IP-address, but it is impossible!!

I wont believe that it is my netcard that should be the problem.

I'm really lost without my internet connection!

If I cant get online I have to switch to another distro, but that
would make my heart bleed !!!!!

Could somebody please me, IRC would be fine if possible!

That looks like zeroconf is messing with your network configuration. You
might have accidentally installed it due to a "recommends" dependency of
some other network-related package. If that is the case then it should
be enough to purge zeroconf to get your normal connectivity back.

I think this is related to 'avahi-daemon'. If you do
dpkg -l|grep avahi
and it shows this package, remove it and then restart your system.

What does the avahi-daemon do ?

And what is the proper way to remove it ?

Hi florian

I have ./usr/share/apps/zeroconf but that is a filecatalog with 8
files ending with ._tcp

How should I purge it ?

I've checked avahi with synaptic and it says that there is a conflict
with mdnsresponder ??

Is this the problem and should it be save to remove it with synaptic ??

You might try rebooting your router, and then rebooting your PC.
Sometimes the DHCP servers on these SOHO routers get borked, and I've
also seen cases where Linux won't pick up the DHCP packets once an
invalid address has been assigned without a power cycle of the network
card.

The bottom line is that you don't have a valid address on your network,
and are probably also getting invalid entries in your resolv.conf file.
If nothing else works, assign an IP address manually with the ifconfig
utility, and manually assign some nameservers (from OpenDNS, say) in
your /etc/resolv.conf file.

From a root console run 'aptitude purge zeroconf'

zeroconf, avahi and others are part of a group of packages to make users
lives easier. zeroconf = zero configuration. That is, these are part of
a system whereby the user does not have to configure anything. It checks
your local network for things like: printers, file shares, etc. and
'discovers' them. In this case, its process is interfering with your
networking. Addresses in the 169.x.x.x range are an indication of this.
I'm not an expert in this, so this from memory. Consult wikipedia for
more info or similar.
