Par défaut Xorg will not start no matter what I do

I recently installed Etch RC1 in a P3 box. The smoke test succeeded up
to the point where Xorg was to be loaded -- it would not load. I ran
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg several times. Each the time process was
able to configure automatically the keyboard, mouse, video card and
monitor settings without my intervention.

I checked the log file and xorg.conf but could find nothing amiss. Can
anyone suggest what to do now?

Here is the xorg installation log file.

This is where I'd start; I'd see if I could fix the kbd and mouse issue.
Google returned a hit at

http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.p...ef71fee66b3906

which suggested (between the lines) "modprobe mouse" for the mouse problem.

Another hit I found indicated a problem with udev (not being installed).

Try "cat /dev/<mousedevice>", where <mousedevice> is the device file for
your mouse connection, such as "/dev/input/mice", etc and then move your
mouse around. You should see a lot of ASCII garbage show up on the
screen. (Ctrl-C to stop the cat.) This will verify if your mouse is
being seen by the system.

Also, does "lspci" report your video card to be on 1:0:0?

Well, you can see there are three errors right there. If you look in
the config file, you see...

Notice the "kdb" and "mouse" drivers. On my system, the config file
has "keyboard" instead of "kbd", and I don't know about "mouse", but I
use "evdev" (lets you use more buttons, etc). Try switching to
"keyboard" and "evdev" and see if that s. (Should probably
comment out the "Protocol PS/2" line too.)

What packages do you have installed related to xorg. You will need at
least xserver-xorg-input-kbd and xserver-xorg-input-mouse,

xserver-xorg depends on some or all of xserver-xorg-input-*

These are needed to provide the modules that your log shows do not
exist.

Good luck.

Doug.

Ken

To troubleshoot your problem more information would .

What is the output of

dpkg -l xserver-xorg* |grep ^i

This happened to me when I used the DAILY SNAPSHOT to install Debian a
month ago.
And this is what fixed it:

I also needed to install my xserver-xorg-video-<driver> package.

Last month I sought advice on how to get Xorg to load. Briefly, I
installed Etch RC1 in a P3 box. The first boot after installation
worked only to the point where Xorg should have started but did not.
Running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and fiddling with the
configurations several times always returned these three EEs:

> (EE) Failed to load module "kbd" (module does not exist, 0)
> (EE) Failed to load module "mouse" (module does not exist, 0)
> (II) APM: driver for the Alliance chipsets: AP6422, AT24, AT3D

In desperation, on 2007-01-16 I posted a query to this list. Five
people answered me with positive suggestions. I am submitting my
success report on the late side; but a series of medical problems have
slowed me down lately.

In short, I discovered that only some of the packages in the
x-server-x-org meta-package had been installed by the installer.
Missing were x-server-xorg-imputs-all, four of its five dependencies,
x-server-xorg-video-all, and all but one of its 36 dependencies. The
two dependencies installed were x-server-xorg-imputs-acecad and
x-server-xorg-video-apm.

I needed only two of the five dependencies of x-server-xorg-imputs-all:
-kbd and -mouse. After installing these two packages and running
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg again I got the kbd and mouse modules
installed, but not the video driver.

I then examined the information about the 36 dependencies and discovered
that each one is specific to a given video card or a group of such
cards. The one installed was -apm, for Alliance Pro Motion cards;
whereas my card was a Matrox.

I then installed xserver-xorg-video-mga and ran dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xorg once more. This time, when asked to choose between apm and
mga, I knew what was meant and so chose mga. When the reconfiguration
ran its course X.org was up and running.

The key question is why did the installer on the Etch RC1 CDROM not
install all the dependencies of the xserver-xorg? Only three were
installed: x-server-xorg-core, and two others which I did not need:
x-server-imputs-acecad and x-server-video-apm. The ones I did need I
had to install myself.

A few days later I used the same build of Etch RC1 to install it from
scratch on my laptop. All the dependencies of x-server-xorg were
installed, and on first boot X.org was loaded without needing any manual
configuration on my part.

I think this was reported before on this list (heh, maybe it was your
thread). Apparently there was some bug floating around that caused
this.

so why did it work the second time from the same build... I believe
the installer does an update before you get to the package selection
stage and perhaps this was fixed so that the update would catch the
problem and fix it. guessing there.

congrats on solving the problem.
