Hi All,
Which of these two gives more performance, Jumbo frames or TOE. Can any one list out the advantages and disadvantages ot these two. Thanks in advance. Anand My Mail-ID: anand.vt@gmail.com |

A piece of red string, or a piece of blue string?" It depends - on how wimpy the processor in the TOE happens to be, or if the TOE is based on an ASIC. And the sort of "performance" in which you are interested - packets per second, or blinded by bits per second. An I/O card has some rather strong constraints on power - ISTR numbers in the 20-30 watt per I/O slot range. That can put some non-trivial constraints on the processing power available. Up in the host, the host CPU(s) are O(100) Watts. Admittedly, one could write some rather tight TOE firmware, or have an ASIC (knuth you with bugs found in the field...) JumboFrames more or less by definition has to be at both ends of the connection, so there is an assist at both ends. TOE can be at either the sender, the receiver, or both. JumboFrames does little if anything if one is sending "small" (in this context < ~1500 bytes) packets. rick jones -- The computing industry isn't as much a game of "Follow The Leader" as it is one of "Ring Around the Rosy" or perhaps "Duck Duck Goose." - Rick Jones these opinions are mine, all mine; HP might not want them anyway... ![]() feel free to post, OR email to rick.jones2 in hp.com but NOT BOTH... |
