I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, if it isn't please
point me to where I should be posting this. Thanks.

I have a strange problem.

I'm connected wirelessly to my router. My router is connected to my

ADSL modem via ethernet cable. I (my computer) can ping my router,

and get to its setup page. I can ping my modem, and get to its

setup page. My router can ping the modem, and the modem can ping

www.belkin.com. But I can't use the internet.

Meanwhile, I can use the internet just fine when my laptop is

attached to the modem via an ethernet cable.

(I've tried messing around with subnet masks, but I really don't

know what I'm doing when it comes to this, I've set them to the

same value, and to different values in different combinations, not

sure if I covered all the logical settings tho)

I've tried to be at thorough as possible, if I've missed anything I can
check it. Any would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the settings for the Modem and Router:

Modem (Belkin ADSL modem):

IP: I've tried 10.0.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0
NAT: Disabled
DHCP Server: Disabled (tried with this enabled, didn't work)
DHCP Relay: Disabled

WAN Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0
DNS Proxy: Enabled (Auto Discovery box checked)

Modem shows succesful connection to ISP, and can ping

www.belkin.com in the test page.

Router (Linksys wireless G router):

Internet Connection Type: Automatic - DHCP
IP: 10.0.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (this only has 7 options, all start with

255.255.255. and end in 0,128,192,224,240,248,252)
DHCP: disabled (again, tested this)
DDNS: disabled
NAT: Disabled
Dynamic Routing (RIP): Disabled

The routing table here looks wrong (Only one entry):

Destination LAN IP: 10.0.0.0
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 0.0.0.0
Interface: LAN & Wireless

Laptop (wireless):

OS: Win XP

IP: 10.0.0.3
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.0.0.1
DNS Server: 10.0.0.1

Laptop (NIC):

IP: 10.0.0.4
Subnet mask: 255.0.0.0
Gateway: 10.0.0.2
DNS: 10.0.0.2

You need to enable NAT on the router, since you have a private address
range on the LAN.

Thanks for your reply. I just tried enabling NAT on the router, and it
didn't have any effect. Do I need to enable it on the modem too?

No, you shouldn't need it on the modem.

I just looked again at your configuration of the router. You said that
it's configured for DHCP. Most ADSL systems use PPPoE, not DHCP.

Just tried this too, it asked me for a username and password, which I
thoguht was weird, since it's the modem which connects to the ISP, but
I entered them anyway. No improvement.

PPPoE normally requires a username and password. However, this may not
be the same as your email account/password, if that's what you used.
Check with the ISP to find out your correct PPPoE authentication info.

The userneame and password entered into the modem work fine. It logs
into the ISP account, and when I'm plugged straight into the modem it
works fine. What confused me is that the _router_ asks for a username
and password as well.

Found a weird way to fix the problem. I've set the laptop's default
gateway to the modem, not the router. Thanks for all your ,

Jeremy,

I would start with ensuring all of the hosts on the same network have
the same subnet mask.

for example 10.0.0.3 /255.255.255.0
10.0.0.4 /255.255.255.0

Right now, your wireless laptop and wired laptop are on two seperate
network, as routers identify hosts by subnet and IP.

It looks like you should only have two networks.

the one from your router to your modem and the second one, the NAT
network.
As stated in one of the early posts, you are using private addressing,
so you will use NAT. The NAT network will point to your only valid IP,
the one you get from your ISP.

HTH,
Chappy

Ask your ISP to register the MAC address of your router connected to the
ADSL modem.
