Thanks Pascal, I will continue checking and hopefully get everything working soon. I will not attempt running Bind ona dynamic IP :-) Do you have an opinion on the settings for refresh, retry & minimum - do they seem excessive? Refresh is set to one week. best, Alasdair |

Zonecheck says that the 'refresh' interval is too high, it should be between 1 hour and 2 days. Also the 'expire' interval should be at least 7 times bigger than the 'refresh' interval. Dnsreport adds that the 'retry' interval is too high and should be decreased to 2 hours. |

One of my relatives has a domain that lacks A records. It has only NS, MX, and CNAME records, all of which point to hosts in other domains. He gets his e-mail just fine. He has no web site nor any other need for a host other than the ones that accept his incoming mail. To answer your question of "how do MTAs query", RTF-RFC (2821). |

The problem would be if I had not configured my MX RR correctly and was losing mail. > To answer your question of "how do MTAs query", RTF-RFC (2821). > The RFC explains it very well, thanks for the hint. The reason I saw 'A' type not found was because there was no MX type there to have priority over it. No CNAME pointed at an MX type RR. As there was no 'A' record to be qualified as a MX type with preference 0. As this is the last chance of resolution (? qualification) this is the error message I see? I think I'll still play with BIND and an unused domain, at least to get my head round all this. |

There is no 'MX' RR. No CNAME pointing to a 'MX' RR or 'A' RR that will be qualified as 'MX' type with preference 0. There's also no 'A' RR that will be qualified as MX type with preference 0, so I see that message? |
