Hi,

I used Apache 2.0.54 (official from www.apache.org) for about a month
on
my computer (WinXP SP2 + Avast antivirus), it worked flawlessly, last
night
I tried installing phpdev 4.23 (i wanted php+mysql and didn't want to
install
them all myself), and since then there's no response from the apache
server,
i go to "http://localhost" and the status bar just says "Waiting for
localhost..."

This is what I tried to do and got the exact same problem:
- i tried reinstalling the previous version (using the same
installation) i had before and now that doesn't work either
- using different ports
- install other versions of apache (2.0.55, 1.3.xx)
- I tried using Reactor Server 1.3, and easyPHP 1.8, and UniServer 3.2a
and 2.3,
- installed the WinXP KB884020 patch:

- i tried disabling the windows firewall
- i closed avast antivirus

Any ideas?

I also tried to run a simple python-based http server and it worked
perfectly (on port 80 and also on some other ports just to make sure)

No, but I recently had a similar problem - same symptom. I tried installing
XAMPP (apache, php, mysql, ...). So, I got rid of everything of theirs,
renamed the folder just to make sure it didn't run, and downloaded Apache by
itself. Same problem. Installed on a 2nd computer, no problem (using
default XP firewall settings, with NAV running); so I started uninstalling
non-essential programs to see if that mattered. I uninstalled Google
desktop and internet download manager, rebooted, and all hell broke loose.
I no longer had any networking at all, and then the computer started popping
up a message saying it needed to shutdown in 1 minute, please save all work.

I ended up having to reinstall XP, and so far, Apache is working correctly;
the only thing I haven't reinstalled is Google desktop search, which I
didn't really use anyway.

So, I never figured out what the problem was, and it probably doesn't
you. But at least you now know you are not alone. Well, actually, now that
I got it working, I guess you are.

That sounds like a virus to me. I've forgotten the name, but there was
one, plus varients, that was rampant several months ago that seems to
me resurging lately. One of its major symptoms was that it shut down
the computer in this way.

Yes, I know about that; and when searching for solutions, that was mostly
what I found. But the virus symptoms, although very similar, were a bit
different. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a virus, for a few reasons I won't
elaborate on.

But I ended up reinstalling the OS, and everything works now, so I'll never
know for sure what was wrong.
