Hi! I'm new.
I want to test some MySQL dbases on my local machine.
I've installed and removed, and installed and removed the Apache server
(vers.2.0.47) over, and over, and over, and over... again, and tried
dozens of possible combinations of installation options, and httpd.conf
settings and directives in order to have the server responding to at
least one and only one other address then the default one.
I've followed the instructions in the included documentation
(http://localhost/manual/) as comfirmed in the on-line documentation
(http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/vhosts/) as well.

All I want is a just a mere, simple, humble address like
"www.example.com". One! At least one and only one! In fact, I don't
even want any more, any longer vhosts! None at all! I just want the
default host to be a "www.example.com"-like address.

Whatever I do, however I set it, it shows up the starting page only for
http://localhost, or http://s0.mshome.net.

It's amazing!!! I'm checking up the vhost settings on the console,
"apache.exe -S", it says no warning, no error, "syntax OK", "default
server www.example.com", and then I type in the browser the same
address, -it isn't OK anymore, anylonger..., it says nothing!

What do I miss, which directive do I overlook, since it happens this
way...???!

You missed the fact that you need to add a DNS entry so that your browser can
resolve www.example.com to an IP address. How you do that depends on your OS,
and whether you have a DNS server on your LAN or not. It has nothing to do with
Apache.

Well, thanks... I've tried all this possible combinations, too. No
chance!

So, I'me currently editting the sites on XP prof., but I strive to
configure the testing servers on some obsolete machines runnig on 98SE,
all connected on a local network. The same network I use when working
on-line using the XP's i-net connection sharing. (I say again: on the
net I don't use the Apache at all! The testing servers are usefull
locally, only.)

Say, the IP's of one testing machines are:
169.254.10.88 sub-m: 255.255.0.0 -locally;
192.168.0.125 sub-m: 255.255.255.0 -i-net sharing.
I open the network settings, take the TCP/IP ->...adapter's properties,
and I get the following tabs: Bindings/ Advanced/ NetBIOS/ DNS
Configuration/ Gateway/ WINS Configuration/ IP address.
Now, would you be so kind as to tell me what to do here, since I've
tried all the possible settings I could figure out, and the most I get
is to have the Apache server to respond to "htpp://192.168.0.125:80"
address on the other machines, but never to "www.example.com"
