Within SSIS where can I specifiy the following attributes for package
run logs?

- File name (e.g. package name with start datetime appended)
- File location
- Retention (e.g. 30 days)
- Level of verbosity

Hi \M,

Right-click on the package background and select "Logging...". This
lets you set up your log providers (file(s)/database(s)/etc). Once
you have selected or created your log providers, these behave just as
any other Connection Manager and should be configured the same way
(probably using package configurations).

Verbosity is determined by checking the events to log in the logging
configuration window on the "Details" tab.

Retention needs to be managed as it is not a built-in feature in SSIS
logging. I typically have a "housekeeping" package which cleans out
log files/tables according to a specified retention policy.

It should be noted that when you run a package, the order of events
is:
1) Log package start
2) Apply package configurations
3) Rest of package ...

So the logging actually starts *before* package configurations are
applied. This should be accommodated in your design - usually I have
2 log files:
1) Package.log -- Default log file which records package start
2) Package_YYYYMMDD.log -- Configured log file created at runtime
which records package execution
