Hi there,
I've done some searching around looking at various different ways to accomplish this... could someone please provide me with the best way to proceed? - I'd like to move my Server 2003 primary DC (including DNS, WINS, DHCP) to a server that's currently running Virtual Server 2005 (Server 2003). Note: I don't want to install the DC as a VM, just on the host server OS. - We have a secondary DC (Server 2003) running in the Domain. - I'd like to keep the same IP as the original server, but the server name can be different. In what order should I move things over to the new server? Can I change the IP of the new destination server after AD has been moved? Any articles that describe the process to follow would be greated appreciated. Thanks! |

Set up the Virtual server as a member server in the domain, set up DNS,
WINS, and DHCP. Use a temp IP address. Copy over whatever files necessary. Run dcpromo on the server you want to remove to make it a member server. At this point you can change the IP and computer names, BEFORE running dcpromo to bring up the new DC. hth DDS "Xandros" <Xandros@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:7C371345-91F9-4904-A05F-BCF7607C7558@microsoft.com... > Hi there, > > I've done some searching around looking at various different ways to > accomplish this... could someone please provide me with the best way to > proceed? > > - I'd like to move my Server 2003 primary DC (including DNS, WINS, DHCP) > to > a server that's currently running Virtual Server 2005 (Server 2003). > Note: > I don't want to install the DC as a VM, just on the host server OS. > - We have a secondary DC (Server 2003) running in the Domain. > - I'd like to keep the same IP as the original server, but the server name > can be different. > In what order should I move things over to the new server? > Can I change the IP of the new destination server after AD has been moved? > > Any articles that describe the process to follow would be greated > appreciated. > > Thanks! > > > > |

Just join the domain, then dcpromo it, installing DNS/WINS/DHCP then (and make it a GC....). If you don't care about migrating the existing databases (I usually don't bother in a small network), you're good to go. You can then transfer the FSMO roles, make sure everything is working, and eventually demote/remove the old DC. |
