Suppose I have an image composed of, say, six layers. The normal histogram
window only shows the result for the composite image. Is there any (easy)
way to see a histogram of a single layer?

Option/Alt-click on the layer-eye to just show that layer.

Okay, that sort-of does it, but it's not the same histogram as if the layer
were the only image. I get a histogram that's the same shape as if it was,
but the levels are so far down that it's almost useless.

The expanded view of the histogram windows has a drop-down option of
either the entire image or the selected layer.
