We are running virtual server R2 SP1 with a windows 2003 ent R2 host and a
guest of the same. We have been using a script to do the backups using VSS
writers and it worked a few times but now it is barfing with this:

The VSS writer for Virtual Server failed during the PrepareBackup phase,
since the backup of virtual machine HOOSIER12 failed. Retry the operation.

We have found only one other person similar with this issue, but no resolve
from what we found, anyone seen this before?

The only thing that has changed really is we loaded Exchange SP2 and
promoted this virtual machine to a domain controller.

I have this issue after installing hotfix 941125 which resolves an issue
where VS2K5R2SP1 hangs when you configure the virtual machines to
automatically start.

I am having the same issue and the 911125 is not installed....

Unless I found a solution I will create a support ticket.....pretty soon...
Are there special tools to troubleshoot VSS.....outside vssadmin ?

I am having the same problem. It was working fine and started seeing that error recently. Running Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 on Windows 2003 R2 SP2. Any info is appreciated.
