I have VS2005 R2 SP1 running with no problems on a XP SP2 box and needed to
have it run on another XP SP2 box to test out performance. To my chagrin, after installing it on the new machine I get the "Could not connect to Virtual Server. Access was denied." "You do not have permission to access the event viewer." --- For the add (this computer) in Recent Events in the Admin web management page. Things tried: 1) Adjusted the COM settings to be wide open, no denials for all in dcomcnfg.exe. 2) Accessing Account is in Administrators. 3) Tried accessing it in Firefox same message. 4) Researched in this newsgroup, and web, for "Access was denied" to no avail. 5) Turned off Norton Firewall/other security gotchas. As mentioned I have this running on another computer....hence my confusion. Here are the facts 1) Virtual Server 2005 R2 SP1 2) Win XP SP2 3) IIS 5 Please advise -- advTHANKSance OmegaMan |

Both machines must be in the same forest. There is no workgroup support.
Basically, messing with ACL's does not . Join the machines to a domain and you are set. There's no requirement that Virtual Server be run only on domain joined computers and I don't see why you'd suggest otherwise nor why you'd make the comment that both machines need to be in the same forest. -- Paul Adare MVP - Virtual Machines http://www.identit.ca Modem: A contraction. If that is not a requirement, then how should it be done to get it
'"working" in a workgroup situation? (I have a similar problem with an app using the MS VM API) dirk. It is indeed not a requirement. Just very convenient from a logon perspective.
In a workgroup scenario, you can logon using credentials with appropriate privileges on the remote host (VS host). In the API scenario, it is a requirement unless you handle authentication yourself in DCOM Security. There is no copy between machines. I use the other machine as my benchmark to
get things running and that is all. When I try to access a fresh install of Virtual Server, I get the access denied. I only mentioned the other box to show that I am not a total newbie. :-) |
