any install log created?

nope..
MSDE setup requires the
/L*v "c:\LogFileName.txt"
parameter in order to verbosely log the installation..

\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Install\cnfgsvr.out
restricted log file is generated resulting like (hopefully, if correctly
installed)
"SQL Server has been correctly configured!"
