Par défaut XP Pro on NT4 Domain Problems

The network consists of an NT4 server and clients with Win2k and a few with
XP Pro. The only protocol running on the server is Netbeui. Each workstation
has Netbeui as well as a static IP address.
I have tried to add a few more XP boxes to this network and have run into
problems. I can join the systems to the domain without any issues but after
rebooting them a few times they start locking up before I can log on.
Sometimes I can enter the username and passord and then it locks up.
Sometimes it locks up before I can even enter the credentials. When they lock
up both the keyboard and mouse are locked solid. Occassionally I can boot up
and log onto the network without any issues although this is very rare.
Sometimes I can boot up, log on locally, log off and then log onto the
domain. there is no real consistency to this problem. the workaround I have
for the time being is as follows. If I boot up without the network cable
connected I can log on to the domain (obviously without aany network
connectivity), then once the desktop is up, I can plug the cable in and get
full network usage and access the server.
I have tried reinstalling netbeui, removed them from the domain and then
rejoined, verified netbeui is bound to the adapter first etc. I have compared
the XP machines that were already part of the domain with these new systems
and cannot see any difference in the setup.
Has anyone come across this problem before? I have done numerous searches on
this and came up with nothing. Hopefully someone can me out with this
and if you need any more info I will try to give you what you need.
Thanks in advance.

Have you disabled the local security policy which tells the XP machine
to encrypt it's secure channel data always?
