Hello group.
We are in control of a /24 block that we have delegated to a customer. Things appear to work. But, when using dnsstuff.com Reverse DNS lookup Tool, it seems the queries go to our DNS server, then get sent back to the root servers, and then back to our DNS, and finally gets redirected to the customers DNS server. See below: (IPs and hostnames changed to protect the innocent.) How I am searching: Asking g.root-servers.net for 1.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa PTR record: g.root-servers.net says to go to basil.arin.net. (zone: 192.in-addr.arpa.) Asking basil.arin.net. for 1.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa PTR record: basil.arin.net [192.55.83.32] says to go to ns3.ourdns.net. (zone: 1.168.192.in-addr.arpa.) Asking ns3.ourdns.net. for 1.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa PTR record: Got CNAME referral (with no NS) to b.root-servers.net (zone 1.0/24.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa.) [from 168.75.183.11] Asking b.root-servers.net for 1.0/24.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa. PTR record: b.root-servers.net [192.228.79.201] says to go to BASIL.ARIN.NET. (zone: 192.in-addr.arpa.) Asking BASIL.ARIN.NET. for 1.0/24.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa. PTR record: basil.arin.net [192.55.83.32] says to go to ns4.ourdns.net. (zone: 1.168.192.in-addr.arpa.) Asking ns4.ourdns.net. for 1.0/24.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa. PTR record: ns4.ourdns.net [168.75.183.12] says to go to ns2.servicesbyname.com. (zone: 0/24.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa.) Asking ns2.customerdns.com. for 1.0/24.1.168.192.in-addr.arpa. PTR record: Note the 3rd "Asking..." line. This part: Got CNAME referral (with no NS) However, wehen using the lookup tool to search on other IPs, it goes to the root DNS, and imediately after it goes to the delegated DNS. It seems that our DNS server doesnt reply with the proper NS information on the first query, but it does on the second one. Any ideas ? DNS is setup on stand alone server, no AD. Thanks in advance. |
