If a notebook computer (WinXP Pro SP1) can ping our servers' IP address, yet
NOT ping their respective server names .. where lies the problem?

The client was configured to use our domain - using static IP's. They client
went on the road for a few weeks, using another profile. Since then, they
have not been able to re-join our domain. (DNS_ERROR_NO_DNS_SERVERS).

Domain controller and backup are NT4's

The client will have to be configured to use only the internal DNS server
that supports and can resolve the AD Domain.

Another profile? Does that mean you disjoined it from the domain? A user
profile wouldn't really have anything to do with network configuration
settings.

If you can't ping internal names, but can IPs, then it is obviously a name
resolution issue and comes down to either DNS or WINS or both and those
specific servers are not specified in the machine's IP properties. But this
also depends on how you are pinging? Are you using an FQDN (ping
servername.domain.com) or just by NetBIOS name (servername)? Is WINS
running? But if you cannot ping by FQDN, or even NetBIOS, since XP will
attempt to suffix the name to it's search suffix and then use DNS, then more
than likely a DNS or WINS issue.

If the DCs are all NT4, then it wouldn't matter to use DNS. But if a DNS
issue is coming up with not being able to join a domain, then it's
suggesting you are using Active Directory, which requires it's own DNS to
store it's resource and service locations in a zone of the same name as the
AD DNS domain name.

As Kevin said, check to see what DNS servers the XP machine is set to in IP
properties.
