Can anyone recommend some free (if possible) tools to check that DNS is
working fine on a machine I've moved a few servers from an NT domain into an AD2003 domain - and a couple of them are having issues like not listing users and security groups properly when trying to add users to folder permissions etc. Thanks Richard |

The first thing you must do for AD is to run one or more internal DNS servers, for all internal clients to use. It is preferable to use the AD Domain controllers for hosting the internal DNS because only Domain Controllers can host zones stored in Active Directory (Active Directory Integrated aka ADI). ADI zones are preferred because it allows dynamic updated zones with security that require authentication before the update is allowed. IF the clients are Windows 2000 or Windows XP, it is required that they use the internal DNS server, exclusively. No external or ISP DNS allowed in any position of an AD domain member. -- Best regards, Kevin D. Netdiag is the best tool for testing DNS in an AD domain, it is installed with the support tools from the instal CD. Windows 2000, XP and Win2k3 all have different versions and are not interchangeable. -- Best regards, Kevin D.
