Hi
I see AVG/Griftsoft have started charging for AVG and no longer hosting a FREE version (in AVG v8). However there are still various places hosting version the previous version (v7.5) which was free. Is there a good reason for NOT using AVG FREE? I have been using AVG free for a couple of years now without any infection, and it seems fine to me. (Better than Norton, which had a patch c.5 years ago which crippled my PC for about 48 hours before the brought out a new patch - losing me two working days... and I still havent forgiven them.) I have also tried McAfee which seemed ok-ish and some Russian thing whos name escapes me. I think they ALL rather slow down the computer, which is irritating. Any thoughts? With thanks Ship Shiperton Henethe |

Not many. Only that I feel that AV software *can* instill a false sense of security leading to careless and dangerous complacency, as such I rarely use it, and certainly not routinely. Check back later to see if they produce a free home-use v8 version. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0 > Is there a good reason for NOT using AVG FREE? If you practice Safe Hex, it shouldn't matter. There are also other free products out there. Avast! comes to mind. > I think they ALL rather slow down the computer, which is irritating. You do know you do not have to "scan Incoming and Outgoing mail", correct? http://k75s.home.att.net/tips-sub.html#avscan -- -bts -Friends don't let friends drive Vista |

So I got it rid of it and started using Avast!. I also changed my firewall at the same time so no more ZoneAlarm or whatever it was... =) Heidi |

AVG 7.5 is still free and still available from Grisoft. Like many commercial software suppliers who offer both free and paid-for versions of their products, the paid-for version gets the latest update earlier than the free version. According to the Grisoft website, there will be a free version of AVG 8.0 sometime later this year. Mark -- http://www.BritishSurnames.co.uk - What does your surname say about you? For server applications, perhaps. But as a client workstation, I don't think so. It may have various technical edges, but where's the software? Sorry, Linux is the o/s that the real world forgot. I use it for running a web server and email server. But that's all. Matt -- The Probert Encyclopaedia http://www.probertencyclopaedia.com |
