Yes, don't reformat your computer.

This doesn't sound like a webmaster question. Perhaps you should be posting
it to a different newsgroup.

If you need to reformat your pc and reload the operating system then you
will need the operating system cd. If you haven't got it then you will need
to buy one.

That is not true. If you have another PC you can map to from a
bootable floppy or USB device that has been formatted for it you can
actually format your drive, and pull the os to install from a
networked connection.

If the OP knew how then I doubt he/she would have asked the question. If the
OP doesn't know how then (in my opinion) obtaining a cd remains the safest
option. However, I stand corrected that there are other options.

As Brian said. Go to a computer shop, and buy an operating system
package and then follow the instructions which come with it.

Your alternatives are going to be very tricky for some one with your
level of experience.

Installing a free as in speech OS.

If you bought your computer w/out the CD but with a license (OEM), you
might get an install CD for a small fee. (IIRC HP/Compaq will send you the
CD).
