Can you recommend a pre-fab online credit card payment system that's
easy to use and wouldn't require me to hire a programmer?

I have my own Web site and domain name, and I'm considering allowing
customers to buy products on my Web site, using their Visa and
Mastercard cards.

I've decided not to use Paypal because it's not as convernient for
online purchasers as the standard credit card system.

2checkout.com is alright for beginners.

Thanks, Tina.

I checked out that Web site.

Since I wrote my question, two people recommended Paypal instead of
standard credit card system for my Web site.

Which system is generally preferred: Paypal or a standard credit card
system for purchasing products from Web sites?

I offer both options. People who buy from me prefer credit cards over
PayPal 4 to 1.

The majority of people prefer a standard credit card system. But there
are three groups of people who will prefer Paypal:

1. Those who don't have a credit card (often because they're too
young, or have a poor credit record).

2. Those who receive significant sums via Paypal (eg, regular eBay
sellers) and want to be able to spend it without needing to withdraw
it first.

3. Those who don't trust you with their card details but nevertheless
are prepared to risk placing an order for a relatively low-value item.

If a significant part of your target market is likely to fall into any
of those three groups, then offering Paypal as well as standard credit
card facilities will probably be worthwhile. But, as a general rule,
any ecommerce operation with more than just a handful of customers
should have a standard credit card system as the basic method of
payment.

I would offer both. We process 1000s of transactions per month and
approximately 45% of those are via Paypal. We've been accepting both since
2000 and the number of people choosing Paypal has drastically increased over
the past 2 or 3 years. I think as people become more aware of scams, fraud
and identity theft, they are more protective of their personal information
and credit card details. Many people pay via credit card through Paypal as
well.

Credit Card transaction fees are about to be removed here in the UK.
Wonder if this will have an effect for these online transactions too.
