Hi,
I have a site that I am switching from static html pages to PHP. Obviously the URL's are going to be different. What would the advice be on the old pages regarding google? There are too many to 301 (over 1,000). Should I just do nothing and let google drop the old pages in its own good time? I suppose there is the possibility of a duplicate content issue in this period but I don't see a good way around this. Any advice? Thanks, Jez. |

It's not my field, but think it would be better than 301 every page. I think I might have a workable solution now anyway. Thanks Paul, Jez Jez |

Isn't there some magic by which php files can be configured to appear as .htm files? Other than that, my advice is, don't do it. If you're good at coding or the CMS (I assume you will use one?) permit this, it's worth writing some rules. Incoming links may otherwise be lost (never mind Google's crawling). You can hire someone like John Bokma if you don't know how to do this yourself. It can be just a single line to shove into .htaccess. -- ~~ Best of wishes Roy S. It should be pretty simple to put the php code in the existing URL and instruct your web server to run those pages through the PHP interpreter. (it's usually based on file extensions). |

Hi Jez, I don't know if you are "google autority" in any keyword. But if you are, use the 301 for these pages. Otherwise you could loose your status. And as it was writte befor: try to use mod_rewrite (on PHP) or ISAPI_Rewrite (on ASP or ASP.NET). It works perfectly, and if you once are used on it, its a quick an mighty tool. You can hide any database and any extension by this. Greetings, Ben. |

Because I have done it, converted a lot of pages from static HTML, or embedded perl, to mod_perl, but kept the URLs. What you do is use mod_rewrite, to say that, if, say, a page http://yoursite.com/yourpage.html is requested, your server should return http://yoursite.com/yourpage.php instead. A lot of people do it and it is no problem. i |
