If I go to Google and type link:montana-riverboats.com
Google reports there are only 2 sites linking in, when that number used to be many more. Alexa reports 35 sites linking to http://montana-riverboats.com Is this disparity because of something mis-configured on my part, or haywire on Google's, or what? |

Google is reporting the number of sites which it has in its index which link to the site in question, similarly, Alexa reports the number of sites it knows about linking to that site. Both figures will be inaccurate, firstly they may be out of date, sites which formerly linked may no longer exist or link. Secondly Google and Alexa are only reporting links they know of, which is not to say there are not other sites linking which have not been spidered by those applications. However there are many sites that link to montana-riverboats.com, that are indexed by Google, that are not appearing in their link: report, like links on Dmoz, phpclasses.org (where I have several public domain page generation classes, that get downloaded frequently). So, if Google's link:domain feature is supposed to report all sites in their indexed set of pages, that link to that domain, then it's currently a broken system. Or something else as yet unexplained is going on. |

It displays only some subset of these. Much more links is displayed in the Google webmaster tools. Hi Darnel,
A ways back Google purposefully 'broke' their link: command because too many web tools were scraping the results. The good news is that Google's Webmaster Central recently added a new set of tools that lets you examine internal and external links to your web site. If you do not have a Webmaster Tools account yet this is a great reason to get one. IMOHO it is the most useful metric they provide. The new tool does not display every link Google knows about, but I have to say I was astonished at first look. Prior to Webmaster Tools most folks used Yahoo! to view incoming links. I now suggest both Yahoo! Site Explorer and Google Webmaster Tools. As an aside, does anyone remember when AllTheWeb.com, prior to its purchase and merging, showed the most inbound links of all the search engines? There was a time when ATW had Google and Yahoo! beat hands down. -- Thomas M. Schmitz President, www.SEOcritique.com Seattle SEO Sunday Coffe is March 4! By default Google has broken its LinkDomain: function. This was done
because of scraping tools. The best way to check your inbound links is to use a combination of Yahoo! Site Explorer and Google Webmaster Tools. Neither will show all of your links, but together it will give you about the best estimate your are going to get. -- Thomas M. Well, time on the net is so.....) ago. And perhapse the reason was scraping tools. The best way to check your inbound links is > to use a combination of Yahoo! Tip, hint: Could you please quote some part of the posting you are responding to. This way after a few days, the posting still makes sense.
