This is odd, is it not? Obviously this is on my XP machine which was
fine until yesterday I changed the default engine from Google or Live
Search (whichever) to Ask. Which I would think is coincidence but I
mention it anyway. I changed it back but it makes no difference. I
could access Ebay Ireland till I tried to log in as myself and then I
lost access to that too. I never tried Ebay Australia. It sounds like
an odd kind of ebay -specific virus - except for quite a bit of
yesterday there were other sites I could get to, couldn't reach Amazon
UK or one client, got them back late yesterday ok. Bloody strange. I
can reach Ebay fine on my other machine which is 98SE. Sigh.

Try tracert ebay

How are your computers connected? Both to a router, or do you make one act
as a bridge (if that's the right term) for the other?

They aren't connected to each other at all. I have to unplug the usb
cable from the back of the cable box to put the other one in. Which
would seem to indicate that there's something specific with the XP
machine, not with the cable box or connection or whatever. I've tried
turning Zone Alarm and Avast off, that makes no diff. I don't think I
have any Windows firewalls functioning either.

Have you tried to flush the DNS in XP?
ipconfig /flushdns

I rang NTL, they got me in with the second proxy. Very odd though.

Here when I ping that ebay address, I get a different IP
(66.135.192.58), but still times out. The site works without any
problem though. Maybe they set their servers to not respond to ping.

So, given the fact that I have no idea why people block ping, what
does that make me? :-)

I used to be blond, but around when I started learning how to read and
write, my hair colour changed, and now it's brown. Can't be a
coincidence :-)

Some people think it stops bad guys (and girls) from discovering their
computer (security by obscurity, always a silly thing).

Ebay probably does it for a little better reason: to stop dDOS via ping.
