Do sites from free domains get indexed well? I have a client that has
a free domain at bravehost.com. I am not sure what I can do to improve
his page ranking with a free domain. There are many site improvements
that I can make for him, and he already has a number of links (out, I
still have to find out if there are any INTO his site). But what kidn
of results can I predict, outside of some SEO on the page with a free
domain. (IE, can I offer him any chance at being within the first few
pages in google and other serch engines?

Thanks,

Nope. Engines want to use their expensive resources to index stuff
that folk are serious about. Free? they'll say. Ptooie! they'll say.
Pay for hosting already!

Unlikely unless it's for some bizarre term where the serps are
exclusively peopled by cheapos with freebie hosting.

Also, most directories will not accept listings from such sites - so that's
another source of links lost.

Domains are under $10/year, and hosting can easily be had for well under
$50/year - why doesn't he just get his own domain? If he's serious about his
website that's really the only thing it makes sense to do.

lol, you need to check google & msn SERPS there's a LOT results from
free domains for high concurency keywords (more than 10mln results).

If you'll buy NEW domain, you will wait for several months to get good
ranking is SE. If you use free hosting (and know some tricks how to use
it right) you take over SERPs in a few days.

But of couse anyway you need to buy domain and start another site to
get more exposure, and link to it from free site to get a better look
for cusomers.

If it's an interesting minority interest site with unusual
or unique keywords that lots of people get interested in
it might do ok, and get fairly well ranked.
For instance a site about an unusual pet, or better
diseases of your unusual pet, with a few latin names
and medical terms thrown in for good measure.

If you want to sell stuff that has a lot of competition,
jewelry, watches, no-consultation prescription meds,
then a free domain isn't going get you far.
For that you would need a registered and properly
hosted domain, even then you would need to
know SEO techniques to rise above the (knowledgable)
competition.

So it depends on the content whether free domains
do well.
Be warned if your ISP registers a domain name
for free it will almost certainly be registered in their
name, not yours. Then you have fallen into a
trap. They can rip you off, impose a high penalty
if you want to leave them, or if it's successful
sell your domain name (with some petty excuse
that you failed to renew in time, or broke one of their
obscure terms and conditions)

This is the subdomain thing, isn't it, that you're referring to? I
thought that was on the way out now? Feel free to explain further,
Comrade...

Yes, do a 301 redirect to a final domain, as freebies will gain exposure ok
but it lacks on relevancy as the freebie domain is about everything and to
much!
