If say I just linked to my home page with the domain name all the time
like back in the day. Would this have no effect really on my SERP's for
my chosen phrases or would it still me. I guess it would as my site
gains importance due to links and some PR.

And you think links to the sites in the TOP spots actually me..?

Thats my goal at the moment some real 'choice links', I had t meet
someone in a Pub the other day and buy him a pint and he agreed to link
me for another website (hotel one) LOL
