I have a work in progress, and have not done too many restorations. I can
clean the images up, but on this one I am not sure which way to go. I would
appreciate any I could get. I am not looking for anyone to do it, just tell
me what I should do. I am concerned about making the top of the image that
has faded match or come close to the lower portion of the image.

Something tells me that perhaps Granny has a suggestion...... :-) I sure
hope so!

make an adjutment layer with curves
use it to make the top part of the photo as the bottom, try to match
contrast

for a minute just ignore the bottom looks too dark
then click mask on the adjustment layer
it should be all white
make a selection of the bottom part up to the area of difference
then feather the selection to soften it
use edit fill >choose black
you may have to adjust the mask position and./or the opacity of the curves
layer

you can use a paintbrush on the mask also if you find it easier

put on overlay
use burn tool on top half
it will take a color shift
make a hue sat layer above
on colorize to even all

Scan it in color, then choose the blue channel (ctrl-3) to look at the
image. Yellowed or faded b/w images render much better under blue
light, to which yellow looks dark.

If you like it, Edit/Mode/Greyscale will convert the image to mono . If
you want to tone the image, say sepia, use Edit/Mode/RGB to turn the
image into color mode - it will still look grey - and then you can color
it or whatever you want.

Ctrl-1 = red channel, ctrl-2 = green channel, ctrl-3 = blue channel, and
ctrl-~ = full color.

It seems as if you already have a couple of excellent working methods
from KatWoman and Colin D.. So I will contribute my 2 cents worth only
because my name was mentioned..

To even out the photo I made 3 copies of the background and ran levels
on them using individual RGB while holding down the Alt key ( Tutorial
here < http://retouchpro.com/tutorials/?m=show&id=255 >)..
1st layer observed the little shirt and hat while using the left slider
till a bit of color showed then the right slider till a little color
showed on each channel(RGB)..
2nd layer same except observed face of little boy..
3rd layer same except observed the face of larger boy.
Then selected all and did a Copy Merged, Paste to bring all the layers
together..
converted to B/W using a Russell Brown method found at <
http://www.russellbrown.com/tips_tech.html > (Just because it was the
first thing that popped up in my action pallet to convert to B/W)..
Used History brush at multiply at about 45% Opacity to darken hair and
top of photo and using screen to bring out larger boys hand and other
dark areas that needed lightening..

but I see there was some info there

KNowing my family, even though this was taken in about 1914, I find it
amazing that there actually is a cat there. I still don't see it. Is it
like one of those statue of liberty things :-)
