.htaccess file to generate a file tree

Basically, I have created a new directory on my webserver and after doing a
bit of reading I realise I need an .htaccess file to create the file tree.
Suggestions on how to do this? Could I simply dump an .htacess file in the
directory and get it to start operating as a file server or is more
involved?

see previous reply, the magic word is
Options +Indexes,
however you might not be able to get it working if the server is under
tight control, because
a) .htaccess might be disabled completely
b) use of Indexes might be disabled.

The configuration of the appearance of the listing was dealt with in
