They have really done a number to many once valuable Usenet
communities. The number of OPs has gone down while the percentage of
spam has gone up. They have pretty well saturated the unmoderated ones
to the point where topic specific posts are virtually impossible to
pick out.

google.public.support.general is a good example. Look at the numbers :
http://groups.google.com/group/googl....general/about .
There is 10% the postings as compared to a year ago and when reading
through the messages, half are in Asian languages that don't translate
well; and when clicked through their links, nothing of value. This was
once a thriving community that provided tons of to the masses of
misinformed. It is a pity to just watch it rot away.
