gphoto2 devrait faire l'affaire :

il fait normalement tout ce que tu attends

éventuellement avec l'interface gtkam (ce qui fait moins artisanal) et
éventuellement gnomefs pour parcourir ton appareil photo.

A moins que ce ne soit ce que tu as déjà essayé ?
