I've gotten around the problem and, of course, it had nothing to do
with hardware limitations.

When I reached to stage of the install where it refused to go any
further, I went back and tried to somehow get the SQL Server service
started. It turns out it wouldn't logon with the Network Service (the
default) but I could get it to successfully logon with the Local System
account.

So...it appears to have installed at this stage -- I hope it goes OK
from here.
