You have not been first to be hit by "problems" caused by starting
"sendmail look alike" by sendmail-8.12+ startup scripts.

Once (a few years ago) I installed a fresh system expecting sendmail as
usual I getting something else (exim). I detected it when I tried to
use sendmail's advanced debugging command line switches :-)
