If it's an interesting minority interest site with unusual
or unique keywords that lots of people get interested in
it might do ok, and get fairly well ranked.
For instance a site about an unusual pet, or better
diseases of your unusual pet, with a few latin names
and medical terms thrown in for good measure.
If you want to sell stuff that has a lot of competition,
jewelry, watches, no-consultation prescription meds,
then a free domain isn't going get you far.
For that you would need a registered and properly
hosted domain, even then you would need to
know
SEO techniques to rise above the (knowledgable)
competition.
So it depends on the content whether free domains
do well.
Be warned if your ISP registers a domain name
for free it will almost certainly be registered in their
name, not yours. Then you have fallen into a
trap. They can rip you off, impose a high penalty
if you want to leave them, or if it's successful
sell your domain name (with some petty excuse
that you failed to renew in time, or broke one of their
obscure terms and conditions)
