However, after patching smtpd_check.c, recompiling and reinstalling postfix
the session still hung after MAIL FROM

Because I was under some pressure
to get the MTA up and running I went for exim, which handles the situation
perfect.
I might give postfix another go in the future, for now I'm going with exim.
