I've been running Thunderbird 1.5 beta 1 with Dovecot 1.0alpha1 for months now with no
problems.

Have you tried deleting the Dovecot indexes so they get rebuilt? This is often a good
first step for any apparent Dovecot problem.

This question might get a more detailed answer on the dovecot mailing list. which is very
active.
