Do you have a DNS server running?
Are you running Active Directory, which would require DNS?
If you have Active Directory running it would be a simple matter of adding a
new host in the zone for the AD domain named it, with the IP of the web
server. Since the AD Domain name should be already in your DNS suffix search
list, it would be resolved in the DNS Suffix search.
If you don't have AD you will need some way to resolve it to the IP of
the web server. This can be easily done with DNS only if it has a DNS name.
But since a DNS client will not send a single-labeled name to DNS, it will
use either NetBIOS broadcast or WINS to resolve the name. In order to get a
client to send a single-label name to DNS you will have to add a trailing
dot "." which tells the DNS client it is a fully qualified DNS name and it
will send it to the DNS server, where you could use a zone named it
where you would create a host leaving the name field blank with the IP of
the web server.

There are a lot of ifs here, but that's all you gave us to work with are
iffys. :-)
