If a bitmap photo, either use Feathering, or the handy plugin under Commands >
Creative > Fade Image.

If you're trying to fade a vector, just select Gradient as a fill type, set
the two colors (match the transparent side to something close to the color
behind it) and then set the transparency to 0%. The box to do that is right
above the color selection.
